Chapter Four: Class Interactions

Overview

The design studio is a place where students learn experientially with the supportive guidance of a professor. Class time in the studio is one of the most important parts of design education. It’s a structured opportunity for students to interact with me and to interact with each other. It’s also rare: some programs have as few as 5 hours of professor/student facetime per week. Since it’s so important and so infrequent, I try to use the time as effectively as possible by leveraging different class styles, including exercises, critique, presentations, and dialogue about theory.
